Tater party!

It's time to go home and sleep in my own bed.

Yesterday was...

Long.
Sad.
Wonderful.
Insane.

Simultaneously one of the worst and best days of my life. We celebrated Rosie's life, and then we said goodbye. And then we told each other how much we are loved, and we were reminded of the vast number of people in our corner.

And we gathered at least fifty people--ALL family--at my uncle's house and made certain the wine and beer industry stayed in business. It was wild to mingle thru that giant crowd of people and realize that by either blood or law I was related to every last one of them. (That party was the insane part. LOL)

Leaving for home in the morning with no idea when next we'll be back. My cousin Eli's threatening to get married and I'll be here for that should it happen, but first he has to ASK, then she has to say yes, and then they have to make plans. That's a lot of ifs. LOL

Right now I'm tired, both both physically and emotionally, and ready for life to go back to some semblance of normalcy. It's like everything got suspended last Monday morning when my cousin called and couldn't resume until yesterday afternoon when Grandma was safely laid to rest. I've missed seeing her this visit, having her smile and say, "Hi honey." But I will remember all the times she did before.

Tater party!

Dateline: Goobermobile

Having been unable to secure hotel rooms in their intended destination due to rail workers, oil workers and those left stranded by severe flooding of the Missouri, our intrepid mourners wend their way through the dark night to their FINAL destination instead. Soon Fargo would gleam on the horizon like a welcome beacon. But not soon enough for some, exhausted from an extremely early start, day-long headache and hours of being on her best behavior so as to not impose on her dear hussy friends for bail money. (Again.)

Some days there simply isn't enough tequila in the world.

Tater party!

So it's 4:30 am and I'm awake. Trip anxiety & headache.

Grandma Rose passed away early Monday morning. She'd been in hospice with kidney failure since about the time of my renal adventure two years ago. She'd been on dialysis and hung in there for quite a while, but her circulation was poor and she was admitted to the hospital last week with gangrene in her feet. They were set to take them, but...

It wasn't shocking news. I'd been preparing for this since I saw her in September '10. Still, the finality is a difficult thing. Talking to my aunts I know she was more than ready, so I suppose that makes it a little easier.

Two of my cousins called me within minutes of hearing the news. Both said virtually the same words. "I needed to talk to someone and you were the first person I thought of--the closest thing I have to a sister." Touching and also helpful. It was funny, the cousin network was more in touch with each other Monday than our parents were. Perhaps it's a product of our techno-hungry information generation; at any rate it's great to have this support system.

In a few hours my parents will be here with the minivan we rented; we'll load up the goobermobile and hit the road. There's only a few last-minute things to pack, and all four adults are signed up as drivers. Hopefully it will be an uneventful and detour-free trip. LOL

Luke, now a Jedi Master, meets a strange man with a blue box he claims is a time machine (it's bigger on the inside!) and together they go forward in time and tell George Lucas to QUIT FUCKING AROUND WITH HIS MOVIES or there will be dire universal consequences. Then they go back and do forensic analysis of the scene in the Mos Eisley Cantina to determine who shot first, Han or Greedo.

Why sometimes my job is not fun.

Planter acrobatics. FYI this happens every year. I bruise like a peach.

ETA: no laughing at my legs. :P

Tater party!

My poor Motorola finally gave up the ghost yesterday. The crack across the face gave and I lost a chunk of the front LCD lens. So...new phone, which I am still getting accustomed to but love unabashedly already after less than 24 hours. Seshat, it was your recommendation that finally put me over the edge of indecision I was teetering on. We went to the Verizon store & I got a package deal on a white phone, screen protectors, a case and headphones. I've downloaded a few apps, all free except Angry Birds LOL, and am slowly discovering all the cool things this little jobby can do.

The Recipe

Blue snowflakes
Hot Buttered Rum

The Batter:

1 lb. butter, softened
1 lb powdered sugar
1 lb light brown sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
2 teaspoons nutmeg
1 quart (4 cups) vanilla ice cream, softened

Combine sugar, butter & spices; beat until light and fluffy. Add the ice cream and stir well. Spoon into a 2 qt freezable container. Thaw before serving.

To Serve:

In large mug put 3 tablespoons of batter, 1 jigger of light rum & top off with boiling water until full. If desired top with whipped cream and a cinnamon stick.

This makes a seriously gigantic batch. Only make a full batch if you plan to serve this at a party or if you'd like to parcel out smaller containers to friends & neighbors. I cut it in half and it lasts my parents and us thru the holiday season. And a tip for mixing: if you have a stand mixer, use it. If you have an electric hand mixer, use it. You will be pleased at how much quicker & easier it comes together.

Also, OBVIOUSLY it is not low-carb or heart conscious. I'm not telling you to drink it every day. However, it IS an awesome alternative to pie and cookies for the adult set. You can serve it to younguns without the rum, but it gets a little rich on its own, so beware.
